I’m sorry my posts keep getting delayed, but there really is nothing I can do about it, except get better and better at writing them, every time I DO write one! Anyway, this time around, I’ve got you a band very close to my heart [the band that inspired my manic thrill for music] the one and only mY ChEmIcAl rOmaNcE with their song ‘I Don’t Love You’.
To get the drift-
“I Don’t Love You” is the sixth track from My Chemical Romance’s third studio album, The Black Parade and is the tenth overall single from the band. It was released April 2, 2007, to the UK., following “Welcome to the Black Parade” and “Famous Last Words”, both of which were AWSOME hits for the band.
While the band was touring, they began to record using the bus’s recording unit. “I Don’t Love You” was one of the only songs to be used on the second-to-last album from the tour bus jam sessions. Ray Toro and Gerard Way can be seen playing an early version of the song from the tour bus sessions on the 2006 DVD Life on the Murder Scene at about 1:57:13 on the first disc.
The song has MANY interpretations to it, and I’ll let you know mine;
The song is a ballad, i.e.; it has a storyline to it. Now, many people have racked their already fried brains trying to figure out what exactly lead singer Gerard Way is trying to say through the heartbreaking and gut-wrenching emotions that line his voice throughout the song, but there have only been a few theories which stand out.
One: The song is about domestic abuse. The lyrics are said from a woman’s POV, and she has suffered long and hard at the hands for her husband who beats here every day and then comes and apologizes for it, “Sometimes I cry so hard from pleading/ So sick and tired of all the needless beating” She basically says that she’s had enough and that he should just leave and then while leaving, confess to his crap and “have the guts to say,/ ‘I don’t love you like I did yesterday’.”
OR The third version is directly linking it to the album’s theme of ‘The Patient’ who is the character all the songs are based on in ‘The Black Parade’ [To understand this, check THIS out!! ^^- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_kZb2zwQy0] The patient is angry at his lover for deserting him in his time of need, and he never wants to see her again, even though he is dying.
The music video was directed by Marc Webb who also directed three previous My Chemical Romance music videos, from their Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge album. Webb was chosen instead of Sam Bayer who directed “Welcome to the Black Parade” and “Famous Last Words” from their third studio album The Black Parade. The music video is about two lovers in a strange abstract world, and the video seems to tell the story of how their love quickly withers away until one leaves the other alone The video is in a color format, most likely to simulate more contrast between the two lovers. It is really a bizarre video for the song and I felt they could have done more with it, given the intense storyline of the song.
What I think:
Well, I’ve GOT to tell you guys this- It’s the most played song on my iPod. The very first time I heard it, it struck a chord deeeeeep within me, like no other song ever has. Way’s voice completely takes over my body every time I listen to the song and I let myself get immersed in its powerful guitar solos, [Courtesy, Ray Toro, lead guitarist of MCR] steady and heart-thumping drum beats and that oh-so-wonderful chorus of “I don’t love you like I loved you yesterday”! Ah, my very soul sings. I think every one who has been in a relationship that has ended badly will understand what the song is getting at. I think the overall message of being committed to the one you love runs strong and clear with the exploding guitar [see the video to get my drift! :)] My favourite part is the guitar solo in the song from 2:44 to 3:05 [in the video version] VERY tragic-sounding with the guitar SCREAMING the narrator’s pleading and pain into your heart…
The video was not really my cup of tea, but needless to say, Frank Iero [The guitarist with the emo hair and tattoo of the scorpion on his neck] is seriously worth looking out for! ;)
I give it a four out of five and four <3 <3 <3 <3’s for the storyline and the message and of course, Gerard Way’s KILLER vocals.
The song nabbed a positive 4/5 star review from music site Pitchfork Media, who claimed: “..it’s the band’s first proper power ballad and, well, they should definitely think about writing dozens more.” :D
That’s all I found because their seem to be very few reviews done on it as it not one of the more famous songs of MCR. :(
“I Don’t Love You” debuted at #65 on the UK Singles Chart on downloads alone on March 25, 2007. It climbed to number #35, still on downloads alone the next week, on April 1, 2007. It rose to #13 in its physical release.
On May 24, 2007, “I Don’t Love You” debuted at #3 on the Galgalatz Israel Top 20.
Anyway, that’s it for me. :D Hope you liked the song and my review. REMEMBER, I want your theories on what the song could mean. Just sum it up in a sentence or two in my comment box, down below. :)
MCR really do take my breath away, especially cause this is one of their less…. VIOLENT songs.^^
